To be sure, this is not an easy job. Developers carry a pager and can get pages anytime, day or night (Japan, China, Canada, U.S., Brazil, lots of fun accents at 3:00 AM). The teams tend to be pretty good to each other with minimal politicing. Promotions are given out mostly-fairly. Don't come to Wal-Mart if you want to work with the latest-and-the-greatest technologies. Wal-Mart is about stability and new tech doesn't come often. The hours are pretty bad too, 45 hours minimum, although they are flex hours (ex: you can work four 12 hour days instead of five 9 hour days).

One nice little perk: concerts. Every year at Shareholders' the company has a week of concerts. The Eagles, Jimmy Buffet, Shakira, Will Smith, some country garbage, some Latin groups -- it's pretty good. We even got a surprise concert by Jewel at the ISD kick-off the year meeting. That was a real treat.

Anyway, good people, good minds, but a lot of stress and a lot of hours.
