  • 3.0 Ok place to work posted on September 13, 2008

It is OK place to work, I can mention flexible hours, competitive pay, medical coverage (important for US) and benefits on one side but on other side lots of bureaucracy, hard to stay really productive and overall they cultivate culture of people who like their lives to be wrap around work. Engineers and PM have this slightly skewed attitude that they are somehow special where in fact they are just average.

They don't need humans engineers, just robots. The big picture isn't exactly shown to engineers. They make money, but don't really take the industry forward.
Overall quality of engineers is'nt something to boast about.

Microsoft has progressive values and excellent benefits. People have room to move and get a breadth of experience. I love working at Microsoft!

  • 4.0 Great work environment, but thick bureaucracy posted on November 27, 2006

I've been a dev in Redmond, WA for 2 years so far.

    - Flexible work hours: if you have no meetings scheduled, nobody cares where you are, as long as work gets done.
    - Excellent benefits: free top notch sports club, shower/towels in every building, 3 week annual vacation for new employees, free drinks.
    - Great first line of management -- genuinely understand the issues coders face and help with career advancement (based on 2 managers I had so far).

  • 3.0 Could be worse... posted on September 20, 2006

After a relatively short time at Microsoft as a Software Tester, I left the company. Microsoft as a whole is a pretty good place to work. They are great about giving you the tools you need to do your job, compensation is above average, and benefits are the best I've seen anywhere. They have an above average vacation package for new-college grads and a VERY flexible work schedule. However, at microsoft, software testers are second class citizens. If you more...
