If you are someone who actually does something (designing or writing code, creating content, etc.) and not a middle manager, AOL/Virginia provides a challenging atmosphere and rewarding environment, not to mention some of the best benefits in the region. Career contacts are abundant, and you get to work among the brightest and most experienced engineers who solve real problems every day and are generous with their knowledge.

    My professional skills and more...

I agree that AOL provides a developer with a chance to reach millions, but that influence is shrinking fast.

As for making developers comfortable, I disagree entirely. I feel vulnerable everyday. I just survived a very unsavory layoff, and I now await the next.

If you're a developer with a job offer from AOL, I'd suggest looking toward a company with growth. You will not find growth here.

Say what you want about AOL, but after years of working on shelfware projects AOL has been a big relief. With it's roots as a technology company and the explosive growth of the 1990's AOL knows how to make programmers comfortable. Like any company experiences will vary wildly by department, but if you can get on a project that's user visible you can really make an impact and reach millions.
